Breathing New Life into Heritage: A Refurbished Conservatory Roof with Double Glazing, Aluminium Cappings, and Leadwork

When one of our cherished clients approached us with a vision to rejuvenate their existing conservatory, we knew it was the perfect opportunity to showcase what bespoke craftsmanship and technical excellence can achieve. At Malbrook, every element is custom designed, and this project was no exception.

A conservatory roof that had served its purpose well but had become outdated - too chilly in the winter, sweltering in the summer, and lacking in aesthetic durability. The client’s goal? A timeless update that preserved character while dramatically increasing comfort, efficiency, and elegance.

Malbrook’s Solution

1. Double Glazed Roof Units
We installed premium double-glazed glass units: 6 mm toughened safety glass with a 16 mm argon-filled air gap—among the most robust specifications in the industry (malbrook.co.uk). This ensures thermal performance, safety, and clarity, enhancing year-round usability.

2. Aluminium Rafter Cappings
Each glazed pane was housed within powder-coated aluminium cappings. These provide the ideal marriage of function and beauty—maintenance-free protection with a finish custom-selected to harmonise with the existing timber aesthetics (malbrook.co.uk). This design reflects Malbrook’s attention to both durability and style.

3. Traditional Leadwork & Flashings
Where the conservatory roof meets the home, we installed Code 4 lead flashing and expertly crafted box gutters. This ensures weathertight integrity and durability, especially important in the ever-changing UK climate.

4. Custom-Tailored Craftsmanship
True to Malbrook’s ethos, every part of this project was bespoke, from the on-site survey and detailed sketches to final installation by our dedicated joinery team. Our hands-on approach ensures that the end result is elegant, functional, and uniquely tailored to the client's lifestyle.

The Outcome

  • Unmatched Year-Round Comfort: The new glazing greatly improves insulation, transforming the conservatory into a year-round living space.
  • Aesthetic Harmony: Aluminium cappings lend sleek, contemporary flair that complements the sophistication of the hardwood timber.
  • Resilient & Low-Maintenance: The combination of modern materials and traditional lead ensures longevity without demanding upkeep.
  • Seamless Integration: Every detail, from flashings to finishes, was tailored to align with the home’s character, achieving cohesion rather than compromise.

At Malbrook, we specialise in crafting bespoke glazed spaces with an unwavering commitment to quality. Each commission—whether a conservatory, orangery, or garden room—is individually designed and custom built in hardwood using traditional joinery methods blended with modern engineering sensibilities. This project is a prime example of how elegance, utility, and heritage can harmoniously coexist.

If your conservatory feels like a seasonal space, let us transform it. At Malbrook, our unique blend of craftsmanship, structural integrity, and design sensitivity breathes new life into your home without losing its soul.
